It is a protected monument under the Goa, Daman and Diu ancient monuments and archaeological sites and remains act. The original occupiers of this Fort were the Desai’s of Sankhali, but it was later traded to the Marathas. The fort was constantly rebuilt by the Portuguese to make it stronger each time. The fort was used as a Military School in the arky 1800’s. The place is also famous and interesting with tale that goes on about Ursula. A woman who wanted to explore a man’s world dressed up like a man and travelled the world. She landed up at this very fort as a soldier but was sadly captured and stripped.
